Smashing Pumpkins

Scheduling an outdoor show on the last day of September was a bold move by the promoters. The last time we went to an outdoor show this time of year we (and the band) about froze to death in the freezing rain. Luckily it was a beautiful warm clear evening. We walked in about 1/2 way thru The Bravery’s opening set. I thought they sounded like The Cure, V thought they sounded like Franz Ferdinand, someone else said they sounded like The Killers. Either way they were pretty good.
Neither of us are big Pumpkins fans, but we had never seen them and Red Rocks is an amazing venue to see anyone. The newly reformed Pumpkins aren’t quite the same as the original line up, but they put on a good show. I have to say I was disappointed with the band’s stage presence, Billy seems a bit detached from the crowd, but he was totally into the music and the moment. The only time he really interacted with the crowd was at the very end of the show to thank the crowd for being so great. I would have to disagree with that too. The crowd seemed pretty mellow too, that might have been due to the fact that our seats were on the very end of the row so we didn’t get the full vibe of being surrounded by 9000 people. The highlight of the show was 1979 solo acoustic by Billy, simply amazing to hear in that venue.
