The doors opened at 5p, we arrived around 5:30p, we found our way as close as we could without crowding anyone. None of us had seen/heard of Nickel Creek before the show. A friend of Brian’s loaned us a Nickel Creek CD for a crash course. They hit the stage around 6. They had a good sound, the crowd enjoyed them but didn’t seem to be too into them.
Ben and the boys hit the stage just after dark at 8pm. They belted out the first 3 songs in just over 30 minutes! It was amazing, the energy and power and grace. They peppered the set with a few songs from the new album, but appeared to just play thru them without any extended jams. (The official tour for the new album starts the next day in Boulder, where I assume they will showcase more of the new material.) A great kickoff to a 4 day weekend of music, Ben and the boys were in great form, jamming and bringing summer to a close the way it should be.
