Carbon Leaf

Bluebird Theater

A great show at the Bluebird: Toby Lightman and Carbon Leaf!

I have to say that I was particularly impressed by opener Toby Lightman. After seeing three openers at Everclear on Wednesday night – none of whom left an impression on me – Toby’s set motivated us to immediately head to the lobby to buy her album. Comparisons: a guitar playing Nora Jones? Soulful voice, good guitar work, and good lyrics. A nice opener for Carbon Leaf.

As usual – Carbon Leaf puts on a great set, even better than when we saw them in September!

The band always seems to have fun playing together – and the crowd was singing along to almost every song, much more than just the main track of the new album (which I guess was all people knew in September!) They did a great cover of the Black Crowes’ She Talks to Angels where they brought Toby Lightman on stage to sing with Barry… A great tune for both of their voices!

Carbon Leaf came to the front of the stage to do an “unplugged” song – without mics…

Took the audience a good 5 mins to figure out what was going on, and a “Shut Up!” from Barry – before they figured out that the band still wanted to play!

Funny twist: both the lead singer & the drummer were in a button down shirt TIE for the entire set & encore. Not sure when they ditched the jeans & t-shirt (which everyone else was in)... Good to tease them about I guess.. “Dress up to go to work?”...
