Low with Laura Veirs

Armstrong Hall – Colorado College
Laura opened the show. She grew up in Colorado Springs, but left for college and now lives in Seattle (soon to be Portland). There were some very nice moments in her set, but over all it left a lot to be desired. She reminds us of Fiona Apple or Liz Phair in their early years. Laura has good guitar work, some good lyrics, but it never seemed to be enough to complete a full song. She uses the crutch of humming or whistling the refrain in almost every song.
A good friend of mine recommended Low to me a few months ago. I picked up their latest record from eMusic and have been listening to it for the past few weeks. I had no idea what to expect from their show. Reviews that I have read mentioned that people at their shows normally sit or even lay down during their sets. Armstrong Hall is all seats, so that answered that question right away. Low came out and played a wide variety of songs from their released albums and broke out a few songs from their upcoming album. Alan mentioned that the new songs will not sound anything like this when the album comes out. (I read an interview somewhere where he said they may not use guitars on the next album.) I was blown away by their music, they striped down each song as much as possible leaving just enough to make it cohesive. The antithesis of Bowie or NIN or Radiohead that put so much work into the effects and post production.
