I wonder if this is more effective at discouraging smoking (seen on the Marlboro signs in the Airport) “Stopping smoking improves your health and can help you live longer. ” Different approach from the US’s “you’ll get XYZ and die if you keep smoking” messages… wonder if it works any better.
Heavy rain at the airport this morning – which caused a brief power outage at the airport (!) – but backup power kicked in pretty quickly. You get the feeling from the lack of reaction by the Maltese that this happens occasionally… island nation mentality? Its clear that their displays, etc. aren’t on UPS (or the main lights, etc.) wonder if that’s typical. Good thing to have already made it through customs I guess!
So Malti (their language) seems to be a mix of Arabic and Italian – but its the only Arabic language written in the English alphabet… I wish I could have picked up some of the language – but the Maltese switch easily between Malti and English – so my learning Malti was really unnecessary. Many street signs were in both – but English signs, etc. were widely used. A very easy country to get around in from that perspective. One of the funny things about all the road signs in Malta – all signs either reference Valetta or Gozo (the small sister island / ferry service from Malta to Gozo). Its such a small country that ALL the busses queue up and return to Valetta (the capital) – in a hub and spoke public transportation system! Just makes it pretty funny when you’re driving around… Those cities are your two references points – makes it hard to get lost!
